The Former PMQ
In 1950s, Hong Kong’s population was rapidly expanding at the time and the need for a larger police force was urgent. Hence, the Hollywood Road Police Married Quarters was built as the first dormitory for Chinese rank and file police officers and the provision of living quarter was an attractive staff benefit for the interested people.
“Conserving Central” Program
Thanks to the “Conserving Central” program, the Hollywood Road Police Married Quarters were developed since 2009. And now, those Quarters were revitalized as a hub for design and creative industries and renamed as PMQ. And all the buildings have been retained, reinforced, refurbished and upgraded for new uses. Residential units have been converted into design studios and shops, offices for creative enterprises and lodging for visiting designers. The top floor of Block B is now a roof-top restaurant with mezzanine floor. Exhibition space and event facilities are also available.
ICON of Hong Kong Creative Industries
PMQ is now operated and managed by PMQ Management Co, Ltd, which is a non-profit-making social enterprise set up by the Musketeers Education and Culture Charitable Foundation Ltd., in collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Centre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Hong Kong Design Institute of the Vocational Training Council. All parties strive to establish PMQ as an ICON of Hong Kong creative industries and showcase HK's high quality brands and build success in the international market.
Night Market in PMQ
While 1600 Pandas World Tour in Hong Kong: Creativity Meets Conservation event ended last week, our team also highly recommend the Night Market in PMQ. This weekend market brings together Hong Kong's creative food vendors, designers, musicians, artists & craftspeople.
The ground floor atrium in PMQ would transform into a night market in the evening that fuses the bazaars of Southeast Asia with open-air music concerts, and a touch of a random evening at your best friend’s house. Fun and experimental, Hong Kong’s most exciting chefs, craftspeople, designers, musicians and artists will be on show for all your needs and wants.
